THE 'O' IN POLO Ralph Lauren, Oprah
At last night's 25th anniversary of the CFDA Awards at the New York Public Library, talk turned from fashion to politics as the recipient of the American Fashion Legend Award, Ralph Lauren, saluted his friend Oprah Winfrey, a presenter at the ceremony, with a nudge towards the White House.
After Oprah called Lauren "our fashion ambassador," Lauren returned the compliment, touting the media queen as a legend and adding that she'd hopefully one day be president. But before the Democratic Party stirred itself into a frothy twitch, Oprah adamantly nodded her head back and forth, mouthing "No" to the assembled crowd several times and making it clear that she wasn't about to start stepping on her man Obama's shoes anytime soon.
Beyond all the conjecture, however, the event succeeded in bringing celebrity and fashion royalty out in droves. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Claire Danes, Kate Bosworth, and Iman and David Bowie joined the industry's elder statesmen Pierre Cardin, Oscar de la Renta, and Lauren, who accepted the Council's Legend Award from Oprah (clad in a pink gown by her award-winning friend).
