HEARTBREAKING WORK Rummage salesman Eggers
True to their unpredictably aberrant reputation, indie publishing house McSweeney's has come up with a creative solution to fixing their $130,000 debt—an eBay auction.
Though we've seen the garage sale approach before, McSweeney's clientele might just be the generous sort of folk to pull their favorite publisher out of the hole that parent company Publishers Group West put them in when they declared bankruptcy last December. With a couple dozen items for auction and high bids reaching more than $5,000 (top items are a painting of George Bush as an amputee by McSweeney's founder Dave Eggers and a Chris Ware original comic), saving McSweeney's might not even come down to a dance-off at the community center.
