Bill Clinton joked recently about taking on a new title, should his wife win the presidency. "My Scottish friends of mine suggested I be called 'First Laddie.'" While popular and logical suggestions include First Gentleman or First Man, the former president's candor may have merely been a greater indication of his precedent-setting prowess.
A White House historian was reluctant to speculate. "It's unprecedented. It's not history," he dodged. "It's up to the protocol people in the White House." Once upon a time, the POTUS's wife was called Mrs. President. Perhaps Bill wouldn't mind being addressed as Mr. President again?
