The occasion was a 2003 dinner for Khalidi, who was Obama's frequent companion at the University of Chicago. Khalidi was about to leave for a position at Columbia University in New York.
The Democratic nominee is said to have told the gathering, "I'm hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation...not just around Mona and Rashid's dinner table (but around) this entire world."
