Christina and Tarek El Moussa's split may have been a shock to fans — but it wasn't a surprise to people close to them, RadarOnline.com has learned.

The Flip or Flop couple revealed to PEOPLE that although they've split, they haven't begun divorce proceedings yet. They want to continue working together — and seem to be on good terms.

"We plan to continue working together in front of the camera," they said. "We have been working towards this for the past five years, and, as you can imagine, fame is a mixed bag. We decided to separate while we reevaluated the next steps in our married life…we believed this was in the best interests of the children and the best way to determine a path forward."

"We have both dated other people following the separation, but neither of us is ready to announce anything in terms of another relationship," Christina, 33, and Tarek, 35, also confirmed.

The HGTV stars also explained that Christina's 911 call about Tarek's alleged suicide attempt was a simple misunderstanding, saying: "his intentions were misread. Once police were there it was determined that he had no negative intentions towards himself or anyone else."

"There was no violence, there was no threat, there were no arrests," they added, neglecting to explain why Christina was "crying and shaking" when police arrived.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, the couple tried working out their issues through therapy and counseling, but was unsuccessful. Now, El Moussa family insiders revealed to PEOPLE that their split wasn't a surprise since "in a lot of ways they just seemed wildly incompatible."

"She has champagne tastes, and he's a beer-from-a-can kind of guy," the source explained. "That was okay for a while, when all they could afford was canned beer. Back then, they were on the same page, working together to make it and to do the best with what they had."

"She didn't really expect to become a TV star, but she wants to enjoy their success and build their brand and really likes being out there," the insider continued, blaming Flip or Flop for their marriage fail. "While Christina would be on board for plot lines that producers came up with like freaking out over the wrong tile being delivered or finding a dead rodent in the corner, Tarek was always more reluctant. He'd pull it off, but he was never going to be a natural."
