Presidential candidate Rand Paul's son was cited in connection with driving under the influence of alcohol Sunday, police in Kentucky said.
William H. Paul crashed his 2006 Honda Ridgeline into the back of an empty parked car at 11:24 a.m., Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said, noting that it was standard procedure to issue a citation, and not arrest him. According to the citation, a "belligerent" Paul reeked of liquor and had "bloodshot, watery eyes."
The politician's 22-year-old son, who was not driving in his own car, was also cited with failure of a non-owner/operator to maintain insurance.

Paul was subsequently taken to University of Kentucky hospital for facial injuries that were not considered serious. Paul, who declined to take a blood test or breathalyzer, failed his field sobriety test, officials said.
The senator's son was cited two years ago for possession of alcohol as a minor, as well as simple assault of a flight attendant, and being intoxicated and disruptive. He later had the charges dropped following a diversion program.

The Kentucky senator "does not comment on any private matter in regards to his family," a spokesman for his campaign said.
