Jim Carrey has been sued for the wrongful death of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White, has learned, amid allegations that he illegally obtained the prescription pills that killed her.

The bombshell lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles this morning by White's estranged husband Mark Burton, only hours after Carrey was spotted acting erratically at an Emmys after-party. And the claims are shocking.

The papers obtained by state, "This is a case about Defendant Jim Carrey using his immense wealth and celebrity status to illegally obtain and distribute highly addictive, and, in this case deadly controlled substances."

According to the lawsuit, he obtained "these drugs illegally and under a bogus name ('Arthur King')" and then gave the drugs to White, "despite the fact that he knew full well that Ms. White (a) was ill equipped to ingest and manage highly additive sic prescription drugs outside the care of a licensed physician; (b) was prone to depression; and (c) had previously attempted to take her own life."

"The result that followed was predictable and foreseeable," the documents claim. "Ms. White overdosed on the drugs on or about September 24, 2015 and died."

The coroner found Ambient, Propranolol and Percocet in her system, and "all came from there pill bottles found near her body bearing the name 'Arthur King,'" the lawsuit states. "Carrey wrongfully and illegally obtained these drugs in clear violation of California law."

He claims Carrey is "responsible."

Burton is demanding damages and a jury trial.

"What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man's lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world. I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat's troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone's control. I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace" Carrey told, through his rep.
