Gabby Douglas Apologizes To Aly Raisman After Victim Shaming Scandal
Gabby Douglas has apologized to her fellow Olympic gymnast and teammate Aly Raisman after seeming to blame her in the wake of Rasiman's sexual abuse claims against a team doctor, Larry Nasser.
After Raisman told people on social media that no matter what a woman is wearing, sexual abuse is never acceptable and the victim should never be shamed, Douglas tweeted, quoting Raisman's post but saying, "It's our responsibility as women to dress modestly and be classy. Dressing in a provocative/sexual way entices the wrong crowd."
Douglas, 21, immediately came under fire for the controversial tweet!
Douglas was a member of the Final Five gymnastics team in Rio, Brazil along with Raisman, Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian but was embroiled in a feud with them after she raised eyebrows with her behavior during the Olympics.
Douglas was accused of "terrible sportsmanship" over social media when she skipped out on meeting President Barack Obama, attending the U.S. Olympic Committee Awards Show and going to the MTV Video Music Awards with her four teammates.
After Douglas dissed Raisman, Biles took a screenshot and blasted her back!
"Shocks me that I'm seeing this but it doesn't surprise me… honestly seeing this brings me to tears bc as your teammate I expected more from you & to support her. I support you Aly & all the other women out there! STAY STRONG," Biles added, to Raisman.
A couple hours after Biles' tweet, Douglas wrote on Twitter, "I didn't correctly word my reply & I am deeply sorry for coming off like I don't stand alongside my teammates. regardless of what you wear, abuse under any circumstance is never acceptable. I am WITH you. #metoo"
Raisman had earlier written, "Just to be clear…Just because a woman does a sexy photoshoot or wears a sexy outfit does not give a man the right to shame her or not believe her when she comes forward about sexual abuse. What is wrong with some of you? AND when a woman dresses sexy it does not give a man the right to sexually abuse her EVER. Women are allowed to feel sexy and comfortable in their own skin, in fact I encourage you all to wear what you feel good in. I will not put up with any woman or girl being shamed for wanting to wear a skirt, dress, etc. I do not tolerate it. Are we clear?"
Raisman, 23, has detailed her alleged abuse at the hands of Nasser in her new book, Fierce, and on 60 Minutes.
