Before Bones star David Boreanaz shocked everyone by publicly announcing he recently had an affair, he first called his wife’s mother to confess everything, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively.

Jaime Bergman’s mom, Sue, told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview that David insisted on telling his mother-in-law directly and apologizing to her before going public.

“He’s been honest with us. He admitted that he got into a bad spot, that he was in a dark place and made a huge, huge, huge mistake,” Sue told RadarOnline.com. “He was very remorseful, and to me, that’s all I needed was to see remorse.”

Upon hearing her son-in-law’s confession, Sue said she wasn’t angry. Instead, she was “surprised.”

“I was surprised. I never, ever saw it coming,” she told RadarOnline.com. “And it tears your heart out. But you make choices. “

Sue also discussed what her daughter Jaime now faces and reveals that she was part of David’s decision to publicly admit his affair.

“All she (Jaime) can do is make a choice: how is she going to deal with it? The bottom line is they’re working through this,” Sue said. “It was a choice they made together to come forward.”

As RadarOnline.com reported, Boreanaz claims the woman he had an affair with tried to extort money from him in exchange for keeping their relationship quiet. That woman (who has remained unnamed) has now hired powerhouse attorney Gloria Allred and will soon tell her story.

Interestingly, Boreanaz also had a fling with Rachel Uchitel—the woman linked to Tiger Woods. Uchitel is also represented by Allred.

Sue told RadarOnline.com that she speaks to daughter Jaime every day and said she supports her daughter’s decision to stand by Boreanaz.

“All of us have regrets but we move on and try to make it right. My daughter is in love with him and always has been,” Sue told RadarOnline.com. “It doesn’t do anybody any good to be mean and nasty. I couldn’t have a better daughter. I couldn’t be more proud.

“David has been honest with his wife, they’re together on this,” Sue continued. “He’s determined to make it right and do better and that’s all you can ask.

“We love him dearly and he’s a great guy. We all have big bumps and little bumps and you love one another enough to forgive and move on. That’s all we can do, really.”
