"Designing Women" Star Dixie Carter Dies

"Designing Women" actress Dixie Carter has died at the age of 70.
She was best known for playing the quick-witted Southerner Julia Sugarbaker for seven years on the CBS sitcom, but she had a host of roles on Broadway and TV.
She's survived by her husband, actor Hal Holbrook and two daughters, Mary Dixie and Ginna.

"This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband said in a statement.

In 2007, Carter received an Emmy nomination for a stint as the devious mother-in-law of Marcia Cross' character, Bree Hodge, on "Desperate Housewives."
