Judd Apatow Goads David Denby into Penis Humor

Only Superbad and 40 Year Old Virgin writer/director Judd Apatow could kick off the New Yorker Festival interview Sunday with a dick joke.

Film critic David Denby asked Apatow if he wakes up at night with revenge fantasies against the guy who canceled Undeclared and The Ben Stiller Show before it, both of which Apatow worked on. The 39-year-old answered, "I don't want to start out with a randy joke, but ... as I realized we were about to get canceled, that day Time magazine put out a list of the 10 best shows on TV and they had Undeclared on there, so I framed it, put a Post-it on it, and sent it to him with a quote that said, 'I don't understand how you can f*** me in the ass when your penis is still in me from last time!'"

Denby replied, "That document, I'm sure, will be deposited in Harvard University in the Apatow papers."

Denby lowered the bar a bit himself, pointing out that Apatow "managed to get the words Jew and penis onto national television, although not always in conjunction with each other.... You described the penis as the last frontier. Was that the Jewish penis you were referring to?"

Apatow laughed and replied, "The first frontier is the Jewish penis. And, actually, the last frontier is the uncircumcised penis."
