New Yorker music writer Alex Ross notes that:
Two more classical critics have fallen by the wayside: Paul Horsley at the Kansas City Star and Lawrence Johnson at the Miami Herald. Johnson will continue to cover music at a blog called South Florida Classical Review. Neither paper is hiring a replacement.
Kansas City folks are pissed about Horsley’s firing; people in Miami weren’t pleased. But all they can seem to do is write letters! Okay, I know it’s like 1894 in the classical music world in many ways, but even back then there were robber-barons and stagecoach-jumping gunslingers and whatever. Media company CEOs don’t care about your letters, folks! Millionaires and corporations only answer to the barrel of a gun or a barrel of money.
