Charles Begged Camilla Not To Marry Husband Andrew Parker Bowles

A new book has ripped the lid off Prince Charles' long and tormented relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, revealing that she chose an "alpha male," her longtime love Andrew Parker Bowles, over the smitten heir to the throne.

Although Charles begged Camilla not to marry Bowles years before Diana was even in the picture, as the Daily Mail reported, she did walk down the aisle with the handsome British army officer.

And in the wake of the heartbreak, jilted Charles cried before his famed 1981 wedding to Princess Diana, the book's sources said.

According to the Daily Mail, the explosive new tome, written by Britain's top royal author Penny Junor, features a wealth of new information provided by Camilla's family and friends.

Camilla, now 69, dated Bowles for seven years and desperately wanted to be his wife, even though he cheated on her with multiple women, the author claimed.

As the book says in an example, "One night, at a dinner party, the woman sitting next to Andrew Parker Bowles turned to him and smiled, 'I'm really hurt, Andrew,' she said teasingly. 'I'm the only one of Camilla's friends you haven't made a pass at. What's wrong with me?' "

Camilla was introduced to Charles by a friend who thought she should be treated better -- and instant sparks flew.

But while Charles was crazy about Camilla, she knew her romance with the Prince wouldn't go anywhere because the royal family insisted on him marrying a virgin—a test she couldn't pass. So Camilla kept seeing Bowles and he finally proposed to her. Camilla happily accepted.

The Prince, then in his 20s, was devastated and begged his mistress not to tie the knot with Bowles, Junor has written. But even though Bowles' cheating ways were well known, Camilla loved his alpha male style, according to Junor's book sources, and they wed in 1973.

A bereft Charles, now 68, married Diana eight years later but wasn't happy about it, according to royal author Junor's interviews.

Her book says a lady-in-waiting to the Queen, who had known Charles wasn't emotionally sure about marrying Diana, "had stood with him at a Buckingham Palace window watching the crowds in the Mall with tears streaming down their faces," before his wedding to Lady Di.

Prince Charles never was able to move on from Camilla and publicly admitted he'd gone back to her while still married to beautiful Diana.

Camilla recently whined in an interview she was a prisoner in her home when having her affair with the Prince.

Charles and Di were officially divorced in 1996. People around the world were devastated when Diana died in a car accident the following year in Paris.

This year, numerous 20-year anniversary specials about the "People's Princess" have been airing to mark her tragic death.

In 2005, the Prince finally married Camilla, who had been bitterly hurt by husband Bowles' infidelity, says the new book. (The Bowleses had divorced in 1995)

The story of the royal love triangle -- with major input from Camilla's side -- is now being serialized in the Daily Mail.
