‘Go To Hell!’ How Stevie Nicks & Lindsey’s Toxic Romance Broke Fleetwood Mac

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Stevie Nicks is still known as one of the most talented musicians of all time—but she didn’t get there the easy way.

In the ‘60s, boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham recognized her talent, and called her in to join his band, Fleetwood Mac. Just a couple of years later, they became the most famous British-American rock band in the world, and sold over 100 million records.

“Stevie Nicks finds herself as effectively the head of one of the biggest bands in the world, completely by accident,” says psychologist Dr. Linda Papadopoulos in a teaser for REELZ’s new docuseries, Breaking the Band: Fleetwood Mac. “How does your boyfriend feel about this?”

Of course, Nicks’ talent quickly began outshining Buckingham’s and eventually their constant feuding led to his firing from the band.

“This will invariable raise feelings of jealousy, of envy, of resentment, the ‘what ifs,” adds Papadopoulos.

In February 1976, after touring to promote the first album in Sausalito, California, the band was in their studio recording their follow-up. But it wasn’t long before the cracks between Nicks and Buckingham began to show.

“Stevie and Lindsay were staying… together and all of a sudden I stop and she goes ‘You go to hell’ and ‘you go to hell,’ and she's singing right into the microphone,” says Fleetwood Mac producer, Ken Caillat, recalling the ex-couple’s constant arguing.

Breaking the Band: Fleetwood Mac airs Sunday, July 8 at10:00 ET / PT on REELZ.
