Meghan McCain is taking a break from The View following father John McCain’s tragic cancer death, RadarOnline.com has learned.

On Tuesday, the Republican commentator was visibly absent from the show, a fact which new cohost Abby Huntsman eventually addressed to viewers.

“Meghan is like a sister to me and this was the hardest thing she has ever been through,” said Huntsman. “Her dad was her best friend, her dad was everything. I was so proud of her—it was like her dad had passed the torch to her. She was now speaking for the family.”

She also honored her friend’s late father, calling him a hero who was “willing to give his life for this country.”

Radar readers know U.S. Senator John McCain died this August 25 after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 81 at the time, and had stopped medical treatment before his sad death.

After his passing, John was transported in his casket to the Arizona state capitol and the U.S. capitol so that fans and friends could pay tribute.

His devastated daughter, Meghan, 33, broke down at both events upon seeing her dad’s casket, but later gave a touching eulogy at his private funeral on August 31.

It is unclear when Meghan McCain will return to The View.
