Mariah Carey's Mother & Twisted Childhood 'Set The Stage' For Her Bipolar Disorder

Mariah Carey is finally opening up about her bipolar disorder diagnosis years after her brother broke the mental health bombshell. In a 2015 interview with The National ENQUIRER, Morgan Carey revealed her how twisted childhood contributed to the shocking diagnosis.

"Our mother set the stage for her dysfunctionality," he told The ENQUIRER of their mother Pat. "She set the stage for the bipolarity, for the inability to have a healthy, honest relationship with a man, with this whole fixation on being a diva."

Morgan explained how their mother, who was a former opera singer, raised her children in an atmosphere of "fear, abandonment and dishonestly."

Their mother allegedly began partying hard when their father Alfred Carey left them when Mariah was 3 years old.

Morgan claimed Pat would leave Mariah, 48, and her sister Alison in the care of drunks and strangers.

Carey opened up about her battle with bipolar disorder for the first time in an interview with People.

"I didn't want to believe it," she said, adding that she got help after "the hardest couple of years I've been through."

"Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me," she said. "It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music."

She is in therapy and is taking medication for bipolar II disorder.

The songstress explained how she first thought she was suffering from "severe sleep disorder."

"But it wasn't normal insomnia and I wasn't lying awake counting sheep," she said. "I was working and working and working… I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down. It turns out that I was experiencing a form of mania. Eventually I would just hit a wall. I guess my depressive episodes were characterized by having very low energy. I would feel so lonely and sad — even guilty that I wasn't doing what I needed to be doing for my career."

Carey, who shares twins Monroe and Moroccan, 6, with ex-husband Nick Cannon, said she is "in a really good place right now."
