The stage star shot to fame as Martin Crane, the rough-hewn, live-in retired father of radio psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammer. The hit sitcom ran from 1993-2004.

After Mahoney's death, Grammer wrote emotionally on Twitter about his esteemed co-star, "He was my father. I loved him."

Jane Leeves, who portrayed Daphne Moon on Frasier, reflected on Mahoney's generous spirit after his death, saying he was the "dearest, sweetest man I have ever known."

Mahoney, who was born in England, moved to America when he was 18 and didn't become a professional actor until he was in his 40s.

He never married and was famously private, refusing to do any Frasier reunions.
