Evel Knievel made a name for himself in motorcycling circles on New Year’s Eve of 1967—but it nearly cost him his life!

On that day, the daredevil performer performed a spectacular, airborne motorcycle stunt in which he flew 141 feet over the fountains at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

Skilled as he was, Knievel missed a motion during his daring stunt and catapulted off of his motorcycle in midair.

In front of a stunned audience, the athlete hit the ground with extreme force, and immediately fell into a coma—which lasted an entire month.

Now, over 50 years later, REELZ’s new docuseries takes viewers back to the bizarre crash and invites eyewitnesses, as well as some of Knievel’s close family members, to comment on the wild incident.

“That crash is one of the greatest, real pieces of sports film in history,” says Kelly Knievel, Evel Knievel’s son, in the show teaser.

After his fall, Knievel was transported to a nearby hospital, unconscious, prompting Vegas bookmakers to believe he would not make it out alive.

So, what really caused Evel Knievel’s brutal crash?

Collision Course: Evel Knievel airs Sunday, August 26th at 10:00 ET / PT on REELZ.
