Ed Sheeran has announced his engagement to girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, the woman he credited for helping him through his struggles with substance abuse. "The A Team" singer, who also has played a Lannister soldier on Game of Thrones, posted a photo of himself and Seaborn on his Instagram page Saturday morning, saying the two got engaged.
But the happy moment happened at the end of last year!
"Got myself a fiancé just before new year," Sheeran, 26, wrote as a caption. "We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx."
Last year, Sheeran revealed on The Jonathan Ross Show that he had to take time off from his red-hot career after he found himself “slipping” into substance abuse issues.
"I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to it — and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour," Sheeran said.
"And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.”
"I never touched anything," he continued. "I started slipping into it, and that's why I took a year off and buggered off.”
On the show, Sheeran credited his girlfriend, Seaborn, 24, for helping through his struggles with substance abuse.
He and Seaborn, said Sheeran, were living together "and I think that was a real help grounding me. I was a 25 year old in the music industry on tour so I just needed someone to balance me out."
"I didn’t really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, ‘Calm yourself down’… It’s all fun to begin with, it all starts off as a party and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call and taking a year off," he revealed.
Sheeran has said Seaborn inspired his song "Perfect," which is Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The two were friends when they attended school in Suffolk, England together. Years later, Sheeran and Seaborn reconnected.
As Radar reported, Sheeran has suffered recent mishaps. He had to postpone several tour dates after he broke his arm after getting hit by a car while biking.
Bizarrely, the singer also got his face sliced open with a sword during a party thrown by Prince Andrew's daughter, Princess Beatrice.
But he's recovered from both incidents and is now planning a wedding!
