50 Dead After Orlando Nightclub Shooting — The Latest Developments
June 12 2016, Updated 3:39 p.m. ET
Early Sunday morning, a gunman opened fire at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL, killing an estimated 50 people and sending around 52 to the hospital.
According to Orlando Police Chief John Mina, the shooting began around 2:20 a.m. at Pulse nightclub, which is described as "Orlando's hottest gay bar."
When the shooting began, an officer already on the scene took action, attempting to subdue the gunman.
Then, additional law enforcement officers arrived to help, and the shooting turned into a hostage situation.
The suspect, a United States citizen by the name of Omar Mateen, was armed with a handgun, an assault rifle, and an unnamed "device."
A nine-officer S.W.A.T. team was brought in to rescue the hostages, and Mateen was shot dead.
Now, the F.B.I. has been brought in to investigate what they are now calling an act of domestic terror.
Authorities are also investigating whether the "well-organized" Mateen had ties to Islamic Terrorists, although he has no known criminal history.
As RadarOnline.com reported, just yesterday, 22-year-old The Voice star Christina Grimmie was shot dead outside her concert in Orlando, FL.
Despite the recent string of shootings in the area, police insist that Orlando is not under attack.
"Our community is strong," the mayor said in a tweet. "We will need to help each other's get through this."
