Omar Mir Seddique Mateen is a United States citizen, born to Afghani parents.
He was married in 2009, and was a registered voter, as well as a notary public up until 2012.
Prior to the shooting, he lived in Port Lucie, Florida, where he worked as a security guard.
Mateen traveled 125 miles to Orlando with two guns and an unnamed device to carry out the "well-organized" shooting, which left at least 50 dead and 53 injured.
Mateen was also killed in the standoff.
"We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren't aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country," Mateen's father told NBC news in a statement.
This has nothing to do with religion," he insisted.
Mateen's father revealed that his son had become enraged after seeing two men kissing months ago in Miami, and thinks that the shooting might be related.
Meanwhile, authorities have not ruled out a possible link to Islamic Terrorism.
In a press conference, the FBI stated that there are suggestions that Mateen may have Jihadist leanings.
