But her natural dad, Peter Michael Escovedo III, lives in a modest bungalow in an iffy L.A. neighborhood, dodging the taxman and scraping by on a slumping musical career, RadarOnline.com has learned.

"Peter's too proud to ask Nicole or Lionel for help, but it's no secret among those who are close to him that he's struggled when it comes to money," a source close to Peter told RadarOnline.com.

But as these exclusive pictures snapped by RadarOnline.com reveal, father and daughter share a striking resemblance, especially their arresting brown eyes. Escovedo was recently spotted leaving his home — which he shares with partner Patrice — wearing a ratty T-shirt and torn jeans on his way to a nearby convenience store.

A source close to Escovedo revealed: "Pete and Patrice moved to a smaller house a couple of years ago. The one they had before was nicer, but it needed a lot of work. Patrice has gotten upset about their situation, but Peter is a musician and an artist. He's always been bohemian and he's happy without many material things."

Escovedo, a percussionist, grew up in a musical family. His father, percussionist Peter Escovedo II, was an original member of the band Santana, and his sister is Prince's former protégé, Sheila E. Richie's birth mother, Karen Moss, was Sheila E.'s executive assistant. When Moss and Escovedo couldn't care for Nicole, the couple allowed her to live with Lionel and his then-wife, Brenda Harvey, who later adopted Nicole.

During his career, Escovedo has performed on recordings with major artists, including Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Nicks and En Vogue. He has also toured with Mariah Carey, Marvin Gaye and Lionel.

A music business source explained: "Peter has worked with so many fantastic artists and as a percussionist, he's one of the best. But with that kind of work, you usually get paid a flat rate. It's not profitable in the long term."
