Garry Shandling died on March 24 at age 66 and his friends – including Kathy Griffin, Judd Apatow, Sarah Silverman, Ryan Phillippe and Albert Brooks – gathered at the late comedian's L.A. home for a star-studded memorial on Sunday, where they played basketball and shared their favorite memories. Griffin and her boyfriend Randy Bick were photographed leaving Shandling's home yesterday. According to a close friend of Griffin's, "Garry was one of the only people that could make Kathy laugh and he helped her tremendously with her career."

"Kathy and Garry have been friends since the 90's and, of course, she is devastated by his loss," the insider said.

The memorial service, which was attended by roughly 40 close friends, "was more of a celebration than it was a super sad thing. They were all a very tight group and will always be, but Garry was kind of the glue that kept them together," said the source.

The group that gathered at Shandling's L.A. mansion included Griffin, 55, Apatow, 48, Silverman, 45, Phillippe, 41, Breckin Meyers, 41, Bill Maher, 60, Jeffrey Tambor, 71, and more. Nothing like a star-studded goodbye!

Brooks looked somber as he left the memorial for man he reportedly considered to be one of his best lifelong friends.
On Friday, just days after Shandling died of a massive heart attack, friends gathered at dinner and posted this photograph on Instagram. The caption read, "An amazing showing for a man who was not only a part of the Thursday's boys dinner, he may be the reason this amazing group of friends has been meeting for close to 500 Thursdays in a row. Great respect for a kind and incredibly talented man."
The source told Radar, "The hardest thing for everyone to understand is why Garry had to go first. He was such a light in so many lives and that is how everyone wanted to remember him."
"After one last game of basketball at his house, which was a tradition, they went around and shared the one funniest moment that they will remember Garry by. There was a lot of laughing and a lot of tears, but everyone got the closure that they wanted from this," said the source.
