As the nation reels from the Ray Rice domestic violence scandal, it’s a sad truth that the former NFL star is certainly not the only celebrity who’s faced charges (or been convicted of) hitting his or her partner. We take a look back at some other domestic violence cases that have shaken the show biz world.

Chris Brown is still paying the price for beating ex-girlfriend Rihanna in a vicious pre-Grammy Awards attack. Five years later, the singer is still on probation after pleading guilty to a felony assault in 2009. In 2013, he told TODAY’s Matt Lauer that through counseling he learned that what he did was “absolutely wrong.”

charlie sheen

Charlie Sheen may love women, but he has a history of violent incidents with them. In 1997, he pled no contest to battery charges and received two years probation (and a $2,800 fine) for beating his then-girlfriend Brittany Ashland. Thirteen years later, in 2010 he pled guilty to third-degree domestic violence after allegedly strangling and holding a knife to his then-wife Brooke Mueller.

Evelyn Lozada chad j

Ray Rice should have taken note of NFL colleague Chad Johnson, whose 2012 assault on then-wife Evelyn Lozada torpedoed his career with the Miami Dolphins, and his marriage. That year – 12 years after he was found guilty of domestic battery against another girlfriend – he was sentenced to probation for head butting Lozada and leaving a gash on her forehead.

During their tumultuous, on-again, off-again relationship, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee served four months in prison after admitting that he kicked Pamela Anderson while she was holding their infant son.

In 2008, former NBA star Dennis Rodman pled no contest to misdemeanor spousal battery charges and was sentenced to three years probation for hitting his then-girlfriend. It’s not his first domestic violence arrest. Rodman was charged after a 1999 dispute with then-wife Carmen Electra (who was also charged) and again, four years later, for a confrontation with his fiancée Michelle Moyer.

Oksana Grigorieva mel gibson

In 2011, Mel Gibson pled no contest to one count of misdemeanor spousal battery for a January 2010 fight with his ex Oksana Grigorieva, chronicled in Radar’s world exclusive tapes. He was sentenced to three years probation and domestic violence counseling. In 2014, a Los Angeles judge dismissed the conviction because the fiery actor-director met his sentence requirements.

Evan Peters emma roberts

Emma Roberts was arrested for domestic violence in Montreal, Canada in July 2013 after hotel guests overheard a dispute coming from the room she shared with boyfriend Evan Peters. Her beau refused to press charges and Roberts’ rep issued a statement dismissing the event as an “unfortunate incident and misunderstanding.”

Columbus Short and tanee

In August 2013, former Scandal actor Columbus Short was sentenced to three years probation and 30 days of community labor following a violent dispute with his estranged wife Tanee McCall-Short. The star accepted a deal after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Ozzy Osbourne has gone on record to discuss the night he tried to strangle his wife Sharon to death. In an interview with London’s Evening Standard newspaper he recalled feeling “numb” after waking up in a jail cell in 1989 to be told by a police officer: “You’re charged with attempting to murder Mrs. Sharon Osbourne.”

Although Bobby Brown denies hitting his late ex-wife Whitney Houston, in 2003 he was arrested for allegedly striking her during an incident at their Georgia home. In a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the late “I Will Always Love You” singer said: “He slapped me, but he was on probation for traffic violations … it went to domestic violence court.”

Perhaps one of the most infamous abusive relationships in rock and roll history is the one the late Ike Turner had with his ex-wife Tina. In his 1999 memoir, Taking Back My Name, the musician admitted: “Sure, I’ve slapped Tina … there have been times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I have never beat her.”

The Godfather of Soul James Brown had a long history of domestic violence. In fact his third wife Adrienne Rodriguez had him arrested four times on assault charges and in January 2004 he was arrested on – and pleaded no contest to – a domestic violence incident involving his companion Tomi Rae Hynie.

The abusive nature of Sean Penn’s relationship with ex-wife Madonna is often swept under the carpet. But in the 1980s he was charged with felony domestic assault after a violent outburst against the singer. He later pled guilty to a misdemeanor.

Believe the hype, in this case: In 2012, Flavor Flav pled guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence case in an incident that saw him threaten the then-17-year-old son of his girlfriend Elizabeth Trujillo with a knife; he has since reconciled with his stepson and the teen’s mom.

Tom Sizemore has been arrested on domestic violence charges numerous times. But the most famous incident involved a 2003 conviction for beating his then-girlfriend, former Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss. The actor was sentenced to seven months in jail for assault and battery.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong wrote a book that included details of the abuse she says she suffered at the hands of her late husband Russell. Although his friends and family deny the claims, Taylor says she had to have “orbital reconstructive surgery” and a “titanium implant” after he punched her in the eye.

Anyone who has heard the 911-tape of the late Nicole Brown Simpson begging the cops to help her after a confrontation with OJ Simpson knows she was petrified of her former husband. In 1989, he pled no contest to a charge of spousal abuse after beating the mom-of-two so badly she needed hospital treatment. He was sentenced to 120 hours of community service, two years probation and received a $200 fine.
