NYC children’s healthcare nonprofit Children’s Health Fund hosted their Annual Benefit at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. It was a spirited evening in support of America’s underserved youth with luminaries from the worlds of entertainment and politics in attendance among a packed room of hundreds overlooking the skyline around Columbus Circle.

Among the list of honorary chairs and attendees included:

Musician, actor and legendary celebrity advocate Harry Belafonte

Mayor Bill de Blasio and former Mayor David Dinkins

Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman delivered heartfelt remarks detailing Belafonte’s illustrious career before presenting him with Children’s Health Fund’s Humanitarian Award. The audience was treated to footage of Belafonte and a host of celebs singing “We Are the World” before the night’s honoree described his meeting CHF co-founder and president Dr. Irwin Redlener through the USA for Africa campaign. Belafonte explained, “We had to reach out to other segments of this society to guide us in this effort,” and he described the evening as “an extension of the experiences” he had with Dr. Redlener in the 1980s.

Mayor Bill de Blasio stopped by to offer his support as well, quipping he wished a gossip columnist was in the room because he was speaking next to “the coolest table in New York” – seating Morgan Freeman, Belafonte and former Mayor David Dinkins, who also offered warm remarks on stage.

Emmy Award winning actress Uzo Aduba just returned from a Heifer International visit in Uganda where she got an in-depth look at Heifer's projects with farmers, who are working toward securing a living income as part of the organization's goal to lift 4 million families out of poverty by 2020. During her trip, Aduba witnessed the impact of Heifer's work when she met with farmers, participated in a Passing on the Gift® ceremony and helped process milk at a community-owned dairy center.

"The visit to Uganda and my meeting with farmers was emotional, thought-provoking and inspirational. The farmers I met are like all of us—they have families to care for, they have dreams of a better life and most important, they have the resolve to make change. The concept of ending global poverty isn't new, and I've come to understand that there's no easy solution. Using Heifer's methods, farmers are able to be self-sufficient and independent of aid, with their eyes toward making a living income so they are truly financially empowered," Aduba said.

Upon entering the village of Nsange, Aduba was greeted with native music and dancing in celebration of Heifer's most important traditions, a Passing on the Gift ceremony. As one of Heifer's key cornerstones, families share the training they receive and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This act extends the impact of the original gift, allowing once impoverished families to become donors and full participants in improving their communities. Aduba led the exchange by handing off goats from four donor farmers to their new families and then officially ended the ceremony by taking part in a traditional dance.

Following a visit to Vietnam, internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Katy Perry is calling for increased focus on children being left behind in one of Asia’s fastest growing economies.

Katy Perry was in rural Ninh Thuan province, among the poorest and most remote regions of Vietnam. She visited UNICEF programs aimed at ending exclusion for children with disabilities, and also saw the organization's work in child survival, education and early childhood development; water, sanitation and hygiene; and climate change, in a particularly challenging environment.

“It was heartbreaking to meet a grandmother who was left to care for four grandchildren after her daughter passed away. The family lives off a bumpy path in a remote village in the hills, and one of the grandchildren, a five-year-old named Linh*, became severely malnourished. If a UNICEF-trained outreach worker had not come to the village, and made sure Linh got the care she needed, she might not be alive today,” said Katy Perry. "Linh is one of millions of children who face such challenges every day. That's something we should all be worried about,” said Katy.

Marc Ching, founder of the Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation and Shannon Keith, founder of ARME (Animal Rescue, Media & Education) have partnered to bring awareness to the dog meat issue plaguing China, South Korea, Thailand and the United States.

Marc Ching has traveled to China and South Korea on three different occasion, saving over 200 dogs from the meat trade. Dogs who are tortured before slaughter, because they believe the adrenaline released during torture, makes the meat more tender.   Marc Ching from the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation risks his life to pull these abused souls from darkness. Takes them to vets where they are nursed back to health.   Shannon Keith works to find and secure safe transport of the dogs to the United States, where they work together to find them forever homes.    When they arrive, there are foster homes lined up for the dogs where they can recover and be socialized until they are ready to be matched with their perfect forever home.

But this is just the beginning.  Marc and Shannon are working with authorities in China in order to make it criminal to abuse dogs for the meat trade, and they are doing work here in the U.S. to stop the illegal dog meat trade.

UCLA Health Sciences has received a $10 million gift, most of which will support multidisciplinary research on migraine, a debilitating neurological disorder that affects 36 million in the U.S., or nearly 1 in 4 Americans.

The gift was made by philanthropists Wendy and Leonard Goldberg. Wendy Goldberg is an editor and author; her husband, Leonard, is an award-winning film and television producer and executive.

More than 90 percent of sufferers are unable to work during their migraine attacks, costing employers $13 billion a year in lost work days; and every 10 seconds, someone in the U.S. goes to an emergency room with a migraine-related complaint.

“The Goldbergs’ visionary gift, which names and endows the UCLA Goldberg Migraine Program, is one of the largest in history from individuals to support migraine research and treatment,” said Dr. John Mazziotta, vice chancellor of UCLA Health Sciences and chief executive officer of UCLA Health. “It will be a complete game changer in the field of headache and migraine – locally and globally.”
