Queen Camilla was effectively "sworn to silence" over King Charles' cancer diagnosis, leaving her desperate to share the devastating news as she met patients and families at a specialist support center just days before the Palace publicly revealed his illness, Radaronline.com can reveal.

Camilla, 79, has disclosed the emotional strain of keeping Charles' condition secret while opening a Maggie's cancer support center at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, north London, a week before his diagnosis was announced on February 5, 2024.

Keeping the King's Diagnosis a Secret

Queen Camilla kept King Charles's cancer diagnosis secret prior to the public announcement.

Charles, 77, was undergoing treatment at the time, but the couple was unable to discuss his condition publicly.

A royal source claimed to Radar: "Camilla had effectively been sworn to silence. She was carrying this enormous private worry while standing in rooms filled with people confronting cancer themselves. There were moments when she desperately wanted to explain why their stories were affecting her so profoundly, but she knew the King's diagnosis was not hers to reveal."

Speaking in a film marking Maggie's 30th anniversary, Camilla recalled: "Nobody could say anything at the time. That was quite difficult. I almost said something but, you know, I felt that it wasn't the time to say. (I) looked at everybody who was suffering and all the relations, and I think it made me realise even more how important these places were."

Talking to Maggie's chief executive Dame Laura Lee, Camilla added: "I was just longing to let it out but obviously I couldn't."

The Queen opened a London cancer center one week before revealing the news.

Buckingham Palace has never disclosed which form of cancer with which Charles was diagnosed.

The Palace said in December the King had responded exceptionally well to treatment and entered a precautionary phase, with treatment reduced.

He has not been described as being in remission.

Another Palace source said Camilla's visit became considerably more emotional because of what was happening privately.

"She suddenly understood those families from an intensely personal perspective," the insider claimed. "She wanted to talk about Charles and acknowledge that she was experiencing some of the same fear and uncertainty, but secrecy surrounding his health had to be maintained until the announcement."

'I Felt It Was More Much More Deep'

Queen Camilla served as the official president of Maggie's cancer centers since 2008.

Camilla said conversations with patients consequently felt "much more deep," explaining she was "almost questioning them" while being careful not to intrude.

She said: "Normally, when I went in, I was just talking to them, but I felt it was much more deep.

"Suddenly your husband is diagnosed and you think goodness, you've been talking to all these people, and I'm the one with some relation who's got to help to look after my poor husband and try to understand it all."

Lee said people had subsequently visited Maggie's because Charles had been open about his diagnosis and continued leading a productive life.

Camilla said of her husband's response to getting cancer: "Nothing stopped him. He just said, 'This is my way I'm going to cope with it.'"

The Queen visited eighteen support centers across the country during her tenure.

Lee said: "The King's openness about his diagnosis has undoubtedly helped others to be more open themselves, and to now hear the Queen's completely understandable and natural response as a wife shines a light on why it is so important that family and friends also get the support they need."

Camilla, Maggie's president since 2008, has visited 18 of its 27 centers, most recently traveling to Cheltenham in January for an extension's opening.

Charles meanwhile arrived at Balmoral for his summer holiday, where he inspected a guard of honor and reinstated the Balmoral Highlanders, a ceremonial group disbanded in 1936 following the death of his great-grandfather, King George V.
