A 13-year-old Florida honors student allegedly stabbed his mother to death while she was sleeping next to his 14-day-old half-sister, and now he will faces charges as an adult in connection with the murder, RadarOnline.com has learned.
According to the Hialeah Police Department, the teen, Derek Rosa, called 911 around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 and said he had just killed his mother, as Front Page Detectives reported.
In 911 audio, Rosa can be heard telling the dispatcher, “I took pictures and I told my friend about it. Was that bad?,” WPLG reported.
Officers responding to the teenager's home found his mother, 39-year-old Irina Garcia, stabbed multiple times and lying next to a crib where her newborn daughter lay. The baby was not harmed in the attack, police said.
Investigators believe Rosa waited for his mom to fall asleep and then killed her. Rosa’s stepfather works as a truck driver and was out of town when the incident occurred, authorities said.
Rosa was initially charged with second-degree murder, but on Oct. 27, a grand jury handed up a first-degree murder indictment, according to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.

The teen, an honors student and had no previous history of mental health issues, was calm and apologetic when police showed up at the crime scene, officers said, WPLG reported.
Rosa was held without bond.
Rosa’s father, Jose Rosa, and grandmother were at court when the updated charge was handed down.
Jose told the judge, “It’s very unfortunate that this tragedy occurred, but this child is very humble, very respectful and nobody could have imagined that this would ever happen. He’s a child. Nobody in the house, in the family, sees him as a grown man.”
