A man was shot dead by police after walking into a Scientology church armed with a sword.

As RadarOnline.com has learned, the “suspicious” male walked into the Scientology church in Inglewood, California, at around 3:30 p.m. this Wednesday, March 27. According to the Los Angeles Times, he was wearing a hoodie and holding a “very large sword” when two police officers approached him.

A woman who was inside the church at the time texted her friend saying there was a “weird guy” that was “acting crazy,” according to KTLA.

Soon, the man was shot, as were two police officers. The Inglewood Police Department told reporters the armed intruder died at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center soon after, and the police are currently recovering from their non-life-threatening injuries. One was shot in the forearm and the other in the hand. It’s unclear if they accidentally shot one another, or if the suspect was also carrying a gun.

The bizarre incident remains under investigation and police are hoping to get more details of the events by watching surveillance footage from the area.

“We thank the Inglewood Police Department for their rapid response in protecting our parishioners and staff members,” the Church of Scientology said in a statement to PEOPLE.

“These officers are doing a heroic job protecting the community and keeping houses of worship safe against hate crimes. We have offered our full support to authorities who are investigating this incident,” the statement continued.
