A newborn baby with her umbilical cord still attached was found in the middle of the road in a rural California neighborhood.

As RadarOnline.com has learned, a deliveryman found the baby girl as he was going along his route at around 4:30 a.m. She was laying on the side of the road, dressed only in a soiled flannel onesie.

Aurelio Fuentes Jr., the newspaper delivery man, told KFSN-TV that he saw a “bright white thing on the road” and initially assumed it was an animal. “I approached slowly next thing you know I see its red you can see the face I saw a face,” he said. “It’s a baby.”

The man carried the newborn to his car and called police, who quickly arrived at the scene. They are still searching for the woman who abandoned her.

“It was just below 30 degrees when the baby was found,” California Highway Patrol Officer Robert Montano told PEOPLE. “It was a very traumatic scene for everybody involved. It is something you never expect to see.”

Police said at a press conference Tuesday, February 12, that the newborn was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital where she is “expected to make a full recovery.”

While cops have not yet identified the mother, a man walking his dog around the area at the time told police that a 5’2” Hispanic woman approached him, looking distraught, and asked if he would take care of her baby. Shortly after, she drove away.
