Michelle Obama Reveals She Suffered Miscarriage, Underwent IVF To Conceive Daughters
Michelle Obama had a wonderful eight years as a first lady next to husband Barack Obama and their two daughters, Malia and Sasha. And while their family seems like epitome of the American dream, life has not always been easy for the pair.
In her memoir, “Becoming,” Michelle, 54, admitted that she suffered a miscarriage 20 years ago, and had to undergo IVF to conceive her children with Barack, 57.
“I felt like I failed because I didn’t know how common miscarriages were because we don’t talk about them,” she said while promoting her book on Good Morning America. “We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken.”
Michelle then opened up about the importance of talking about women’s bodies and becoming educated on the process of conceiving.
“That’s one of the reasons why I think it’s important to talk to young mothers about the fact that miscarriages happen,” she said.
She added that when she was 34 or 35, she and Barack “had to do IVF” to conceive Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17.
They chose to keep the matter private, but looking at today’s powerful feminists, she wishes she had spoken out sooner.
