More than 10 months after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, Las Vegas police are closing their investigation. But there is still one question they may never be able to answer: Why did Stephen Paddock murder 58 innocent people?

“What we have been able to answer are the questions of who, what, when, where and how,” Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Friday. “What we have not been able to definitively answer is ... why Stephen Paddock committed this act.”

Authorities say Paddock, 64, was an “unremarkable man” before the Oct. 1 shooting on the Las Vegas Strip that killed 58 people attending an outdoor concert.

“Today it is still incredibly difficult to try to comprehend this senseless act of violence,”  Lombardo added.

Paddock was described as a reclusive, high-stakes gambler who spent more than $1 million in the year leading up to the shooting.

Interviews with Paddock’s doctor indicated he had a “troubled mind,” but there were no hints he was capable of such carnage, officials said, and he didn’t leave a manifesto “or even a note” to answer questions about his motive, Lombardo added.

With the closure of investigation, no one else will be charged unless new evidence is uncovered, and authorities are confident Paddock acted alone.
