As TV pundits continue to write Jay Leno’s early obituary, the talk show host made a wry joke at his own expense Tuesday night on his ratings-challenged program.

Leno’s crack came as he was making fried Oreos and pizza on the show with guests Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri and Kim Kardashian.

When Fieri put on a paper hat (like the ones used at many fast food restaurants), he quipped,  “just like the days from McDonalds.”

Jay then muttered, “I may be doing this again very soon.”

Leno’s primetime show has steadily declined in the ratings since its stellar debut last September 14 when it pulled in an impressive 18-million viewers. Of course, Leno had the benefit of scoring the first interview with R&B superstar Kanye West following his now infamous trophy stealing stunt involving Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards.

In wake of Leno’s ratings free-for-all, some NBC stations around the country have demanded the show be canceled, saying it is adversely impacting their late night newscasts which follows Leno’s show.
