Hola! We’ve got a muy bien update for you in the ever-expanding world of MTV!  They’ve recently launched a brand-new Latin focused channel called MTV Tr3s (it’s now airing on major cable providers such as Time Warner) with programming rooted in the fusion of American and Latino music, cultures, lifestyles and languages. This combo makes for some muy caliente shows to spice up your TV viewing.

Two shows on MTV Tr3s that we’re particularly excited about is Isa TKM and The Yearbook Chronicles. Both are young, hip and cutting edge. They could easily air on MTV proper—but have a little spice and in the case of Isa TKM, have subtitles—to make them ripe for MTV Tr3s viewers.

Isa TKM is already a huge hit in Latin America and the best way to describe it is a High School Musical style telenovela! The show focuses on Isabella (played by newcomer Maria Gabriela de Faria) as she experiences all things that make high school such a confusing (and wonderful) time including the anxiety of her first love, the anticipation of her first kiss and her emotional quest to find her real parents (she’s adopted). And of course, she loves music and loves to sing! The show airs every weekday at 5pm and a soundtrack to the show is in stores now. Ole!

And The Yearbook Chronicles is an English language special that airs on MTV Tr3s on Saturday, September 26th at 2pm. In the vein of MTV’s hugely popular True Life series, The Yearbook Chronicles is a groundbreaking documentary that examines the rise in young people dropping out of high school, especially within predominantly Latino communities. The Yearbook Chronicles goes behind the scenes at Bell High School in Los Angeles, California where Mexicans are the predominant nationality in the 98% Latino student body. The national dropout rate for high school students is 9%. But in California? The average is a jaw dropping 20%.  The show’s twist is it follows four students of Mexican heritage in the Bell High School Class of 2009 who are members of the school yearbook club. Their assignment: to find a former high school classmate and discover why they dropped out of school.
