The former Executive Producer of American Idol told in an exclusive interview that having four judges on the panel is a mistake.

Nigel Lythgoe -- who's now  the Executive Producer of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance-- told that the extra judge takes too much time away from the show. He said the revamped format also doesn't allow kingpin evaluator Simon Cowell enough time to dissect the singers in his inimitable way.

Lythgoe said his opinion is not reflective of his estimation of fourth judge Kara Dioguardi, and that the extra evaluator has, to an extent, worked.

"I'm old fashioned," he said, chuckling.
