Tom Cruise had a rivalry with one-upping fellow espionage action hero Daniel Craig and sources believe that's what led to him breaking his ankle RadarOnline.com exclusively learned!

"Tom is so determined to out-do Daniel, especially when it comes to stunts," an insider dished to RadarOnline.com.

"He'll do whatever it takes to prove he's the better action man, even when that means taking all kinds of dangerous risks."

The famed Scientologist, 55, considered Craig, 49, a major rival in Hollywood.

"Tom has already seriously injured himself this year, and if he carries on down this route it could be dangerous," the source told RadarOnline.com.

The rivalry stretched back for years.

"Tom has been interested in Daniel's career ever since Casino Royale came out, and he spends hours on end analyzing all his films and stunts."
