Robert Reagan, the 51-year-old boyfriend suspected of murdering reality star Loredana Nesci, killed her in self-defense, according to his attorney, Shepard Kopp.

The 47-year-old star of Sundance TV's Loredana, Esq. charged at Reagan armed with a hunting knife in the Redondo Beach, Calif. home they shared, the lawyer said, noting that his client was trying "to disarm her" in the ensuing conflict, the Daily Breeze reported.

"In the intense struggle that ensued, she tragically suffered a fatal wound," Kopp said, adding that Reagan "is not guilty of committing any criminal offense."

He explained the dangers his client faced in the tragic domestic dispute: "Loredana Nesci was a former LAPD officer, highly trained in the use of deadly weapons.

"She was also an avid bodybuilder, and was exceptionally strong."

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Reagan summoned authorities to the Nelson Avenue home early Wednesday to report the incident, and was taken into custody after Nesci's body was found on the property. The couple had a 5-year-old son named Rocco who wasn't present when the violent run-in occurred.

Reagan is due back in court Aug. 20 for an arraignment; he faces 26 years to life if he's convicted in the murder of his partner.
