A female prison guard in England has been jailed after admitting to having an “emotional or intimate relationship” with one of the inmates she was supposed to be watching, RadarOnline.com has learned.
Between Nov. 1, 2020, and Mar. 8, 2021, officials said Rachel Martin, a 25-year-old corrections officer at HMP Guys Marsh in Dorset, had a relationship with prisoner Raymond Abraham, as Front Page Detectives reported.
Martin allegedly confessed to smuggling packages, including designer women’s underwear, into the prison during the timeframe, and pocketing more than $21,000 from Abraham, which authorities estimated after analyzing bank transfers and cash deposits between the two, attorney Jodie Mittell said.
On Feb. 3, 2021, Martin was randomly searched at work, and a remote-controlled vibrator was found in her jacket pocket.
Three days later, officers searched Abraham’s prison cell and found a mobile phone, women’s underwear, two USB sticks and an SD card containing underwear-clad photos of Martin.
Martin was sent home from work, and she resigned from her position two days later.
The prisoner and former guard's relationship allegedly continued until she was placed under arrest on April 1, 2021. Police searched Martin's home and found over $3,500 in cash and receipts for shoes and other “high value material,” officials said.
Police said officers also found two cell phones with call logs that showed the pair exchanged hundreds of calls between Feb. 6 and Mar. 16, 2021.
"She willfully neglected to report that Mr. Abraham had a phone and engaged in a series of communications with him knowing it was a criminal offense for a prisoner to have such a device,” Mittell said.
The lawyer added that Martin “willfully received payments" totaling over $21,000 that were "organized or paid for by Mr. Abraham.”
An investigation into the cell phones found about 1,900 WhatsApp messages sent between Martin and Abraham over several months that contained declarations of love for each other, some of which were explicit in nature, authorities said.
Martin’s defense attorney, Claire Mawer, said Abraham, who was 40-years-old during the relationship, “groomed” her client and “took advantage of the guard's vulnerability” because she was going through a breakup at the time.
Mawer added, “He approached Ms. Martin, he initiated contact and was persistent in encouraging contact."
Martin admitted to nine misconduct offenses and the judge sentenced her to 16 months in jail.
