A New York man has been arrested after he allegedly stole a fire truck and took it for a “joy ride,” RadarOnline.com has learned.
Around 10:45 p.m. on May 16, an elderly man drove away with a 2019 Chevrolet Fire Utility Vehicle from the Eagle Mills Fire Department, as Front Page Detectives reported.
Video footage allegedly captured an image of the man, but officials didn’t say how the man was able to access the firehouse and drive the vehicle away.
The vehicle was last seen exiting the parking lot of the firehouse and heading west.
Authorities said the suspect had an orange bicycle with him, which he placed inside the stolen fire truck.
Around 12 p.m. on May 17, the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office announced the vehicle was recovered in the Town of Colonie after a tip was sent to the sheriff’s Facebook page.
“I’m glad we found it," Assistant Chief Brian Beaudoin said. "It looks like someone had a joy ride.”
The distance from the firehouse to where the vehicle was found is 17 miles, or about a 25-minute drive.
The truck was not damaged during the drive, officials said.
Around 3 p.m. on May 17, officials announced the suspect was arrested and charged with burglary and grand larceny, but his identity was not revealed.
