Unless you're already into juicing, you've probably never thought of drinking fresh red bell peppers. However, since these fruits are almost 100 percent water, they're an easy way to slip sweet flavors into a hydrating beverage. As a bonus, you can serve a simple red pepper seltzer to folks on a non-alcoholic diet.

Some people assume there's no significant difference between red, yellow, or green bell peppers (besides aesthetics, of course). After all, each of these cultivars is just a variation on the same fruit, right?

Well, according to recent research, there are significant differences between different bell peppers. From a taste perspective, green bell peppers have more bitter compounds versus the sweeter red, yellow, or orange varieties. Also, green bell peppers tend to have the crispest "crunch" compared with these other bell peppers.

Since green bell peppers aren't super sweet, you might assume they have greater health benefits. Less sweetness means less natural sugars, which should make them the healthier option.

In reality, scientists claim red bell peppers have way more antioxidants than green bell peppers. Get this: One red bell pepper has over 10-times the beta-carotene that's in a similar-sized green bell pepper.

Apparently, as bell peppers age, they produce more beneficial vitamins and minerals. Green bell peppers are always picked early in the season, so they don't have enough time to develop these healthy compounds.

While green bell peppers aren't "bad," they aren't a great substitute when making this mocktail — unless you love bitter drinks. However, you may be able to get away with an orange or yellow bell pepper if there aren't any red bell peppers in your supermarket.

Ingredients

• 1 small red bell pepper, chopped

• 2 - 3 basil leaves, sliced

• 1 ½ oz lemon juice

• 1 oz simple syrup

• Citrus-flavored seltzer water, to top

• 1 dropperful Tribe CBD oil

Directions

• Add red bell pepper, basil, lemon juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker

• Muddle well to extract bell peppers' juices

• Add ice and shake until well chilled

• Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass

• Top with seltzer water and Tribe CBD oil

• Add a reserved bell pepper slice or basil leaves for garnish

However, bell pepper seeds won't add additional heat to your recipes like jalapeno seeds. Bell peppers have a Scoville Heat Score of zero, which means they don't contain the spicy compound capsaicin.
