Lifestyle: Sexual Lyrics Lead To Underage Sex?

“Warning: Listening to music with degrading sexual lyrics could prompt teenagers to start having sex at an earlier age.”  No! Color us surprised.

A US study found that those who regularly listened to music with explicit and aggressive sexual phrases were twice as likely to be having sex.

For the study, degrading sexual lyrics were determined as songs which described sex as a physical rather than loving act and also where it was linked to power, the American Journal of Preventative Medicine reported. Take 50 cent. Please.

I’ll take you to the candy shop
I’ll let you lick the lollipop
Go ‘head girl, don’t you stop
Keep going ’til you hit the spot

Surveys were completed by 711 ninth-grade students at three large urban high schools. These participants were exposed to over 14 hours each week of lyrics describing degrading sex. About one third had previously been sexually active. Anyone listen to the Ying Yang Twins “Wait (The Whisper Song)” which extols the virtues of, ah, “rough sex?”

The researchers found that compared to those with the least exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex, those with the most exposure were more than twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse.

Fortunately for teenagers everywhere, the experts concluded it was too simplistic to link music directly to behavior.
