Jamie Lee Curtis Admits 10-Year Opioid Addiction: 'No One Knew'

Jamie Lee Curtis just dropped a massive bombshell about her wild past. In a tell-all interview with PEOPLE, the Halloween actress admitted that during the 1980s, she suffered from a heavy opioid addiction that lasted an entire decade.

"I was ahead of the curve of the opiate epidemic," Curtis, 59, told the publication. "I had a 10-year run, stealing, conniving. No one knew. No one."

She said that it all began in 1989 when she was prescribed pain killers after undergoing a minor plastic surgery procedure on her eyes. While the medicine helped her pain at first, she eventually became dependent on it and began stealing every pill she could get from friends and family — even from sister Kelly Curtis, who was the first to discover her habit, nine years later.

In 1999, Curtis came clean about her opioid addiction to longtime husband Christopher Guest — whom she remains married to. She then attended her first recovery meeting, having spent the last decade hiding her secret from all her loved ones, including daughter Annie Guest, 31, and son Thomas Guest, 22.

The actress — who has been sober for 20 years now — told the publication that attending rehab was a real struggle because of the taboo surrounding opioids but getting sober remains her greatest achievement.

"I'm breaking the cycle that has basically destroyed the lives of generations in my family," Curtis said. "Getting sober remains my single greatest accomplishment… bigger than my husband, bigger than both of my children and bigger than any work, success, failure. Anything."

While Curtis' addiction is shocking, RadarOnline.com readers know the actress has a family history of substance abuse. Her famous father, Tony Curtis, was a known alcoholic and heroin addict, as was her brother, Nicholas Curtis. Both of them passed away.
