90 Day Fiancé is one of the most shocking shows on TLC. The show finds Americans who are in long-distance relationships with an international partner and brings them together in the United States. The partner visits the U.S. on a K-1 visa, which allows them to stay for 90 days before they have to make an important decision, either they get married and stay in the U.S., or they return to their home country.

There are many major hurdles for the couple to get over, and oftentimes that proves impossible.

1. Chantel Everett Disses Her In-Laws’ Cooking

A surefire way to get on someone's bad side is by insulting their cooking, especially if you diss one of their signature dishes. Unfortunately for Chantel Everett, her parents weren't able to muster the required enthusiasm when her husband Pedro Jimeno's family served them a traditional dish.

Both families were opposed to their relationship before Chantel and her parents even traveled to meet the Jimeno family during season two of the 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After spinoff show in 2017. But when Chantel and Pedro got married stateside, they agreed to travel to Jimeno's native Dominican Republic for a second ceremony and a family dinner ... and that's when things got uncomfortable.

The Jimeno family served the Everetts chicken feet and chicken neck. Chantel's mother wasn't having it and assumed the dish was part of some sort of voodoo ritual. "In the religion of voodoo, they use a lot of chicken feet, so naturally I don't want to be taken advantage of," she said.

Jimeno's mother, meanwhile, was offended that her guests refused to eat the food she served, but Chantel did point out that both Pedro's mother and sister weren't touching the chicken either. In the end, Chantel's parents stormed out, and Chantel stayed behind and ate with her husband's family.

But Chantel and Pedro didn't let the incident derail their relationship. Since then, they've gotten their own spinoff showThe Family Chantel, and Chantel has graduated from nursing school.

2. Larissa Dos Santos And Colt Johnson Marry After A Brief Engagement

Colt Johnson and Larissa Dos Santos didn't wait long to tie the knot. The couple's brief courtship was shown during 90 Day Fiancé's sixth season. Johnson hadn't had much luck with American women, so he tried his hand at dating sites and met Dos Santos, who's from Brazil. The two traveled to Mexico to meet, and Colt popped the question after just five days. They married on June 24th, 2018.

But their happiness was short-lived. In January 2019, Dos Santos was reportedly arrested for domestic battery after a fight with Johnson. When officers arrived, a bloodied Dos Santos allegedly claimed Johnson had assaulted her, but officers later reportedly determined that her injuries were self-inflicted.

Meanwhile, an officer said Johnson had “a swollen lip, and his gums and teeth were bloodied." Since Dos Santos had already been arrested twice in 2018 — allegedly for domestic violence against Johnson — she was determined to be the aggressor. Ultimately, Dos Santos was reportedly ordered to serve 48 hours of community service and pay a $345 fine for the incident.

On May 1st, 2019, Johnson and Dos Santos officially divorced.

Losing a job can strain any marriage, and the strain is even worse if your marriage is being televised in front of the entire country. Russ Mayfield first met his wife-to-be Paola in Colombia, where he was working as an oil industry engineer. (She's from Bucaramanga.) They began the K-1 visa process in 2012 so that Paola could move to Russ's native Oklahoma, and in October 2013 they officially married.

Paola struggled to adapt to Oklahoma, but things got particularly bad during season two of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After, when Russ lost his job. The job loss put a financial strain on their relationship. Paola tried to supplement their income with modeling gigs, including lingerie modeling, but Russ thought it was "too sexy." Which didn't help the situation.

But in the end, Russ and Paola both figured things out. The couple moved to Miami, where Russ has a new job and Paola owns her own fitness company, Super Pao Fit. She's also working to become a social media influencer. And in January 2019, the couple had their first child.

MORE ON:
90 Day Fiancé

Ashley Martson and Jay Smith were not a perfect match when their relationship began. Martson first met Smith in his native Jamaica while she was attending a friend's wedding. She'd already had two failed engagements and was looking to settle down, while he enjoyed partying and was much younger — she's 33, and he's 22. Nevertheless, their meeting sparked a connection. Six months later she went back to visit Smith, and eight days after that, he proposed.

The couple's story appeared on season six of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After. The couple eloped and were married in Las Vegas. Shortly after they returned to Martson's home in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, the problems began. Martson discovered that Smith was using a secret Tinder profile to meet women on the down low, and when she confronted him, he initially lied about it. Then there was the time Smith reportedly hooked up with someone in the bathroom of the barbershop where he worked.

For his part, Smith later claimed the Tinder incident was staged for the show. He did admit to the hookup, but claimed producers paid the barbershop's owners for the tipoff about it.

Martson first filed for divorce in January 2019, just eight months after their wedding. But she withdrew the paperwork and they attempted to reconcile a day later. She filed for divorce again later that year, and in November 2019 they were officially split.

5. Azan Tefou Criticizes Nicole Nafziger’s Weight

One of the risks of online dating is that the person you meet online can often be very different from the person you meet in real life. Nicole Nafziger was a 21-year-old single mother from Bradenton, Florida when she first met Azan Tefou, a 23-year-old from Agadir, Morocco. The two appeared on the fourth and fifth seasons of 90 Day Fiancé and then on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After.

Nafziger and Tefou met online, and Nafziger took a five-week trip to Morocco to meet him. But when Tefou first saw Nafziger in person, he said she was, "big ... a little bit." Nafziger promised to lose weight, but Tefou later discovered she was hoarding sweets. They also differed over PDA’s. Tefou didn’t want to hug and kiss in public as his culture forbade non-married couples to do so, but Nafziger internalized it as rejection. They also had issues deciding on a religion — Nafziger being Christian and Tefou being Muslim.

But Tefou got over his initial surprise, and both of them have gotten over their differences. As of March 2020 they're still in a relationship — albeit a long-distance one — she's still in Florida, and he's still in Morocco.

6. Olulowo Shodipe Catfishes Narkyia Lathan

"Catfished" might be too strong a word for what happened, but that's what Narkiya Lathan said Olulowo Shodipe did when they first met. A native of Nigeria, Shodipe was living in Vietnam when he met Lathan on a social media group for plus-size women. According to Lathan, Shodipe told her he was living in Alabama, that he was actually a Nigerian prince and that the mother of his only son was deceased when in fact she's alive.

When Lathan learned the truth about Shodipe's baby mama, the couple split. But they later patched things up, got married and are still together today. They own a custom rental business called Lowkey Rentals, and in March 2020, Lathan announced she and Shodipe are expecting their first child together.

7. David Toborowsky Pays A Dowry For Marry Annie Suwan

David Toborowsky learned the hard way that the practice of a groom paying a dowry to the bride's parents is sometimes still very much a part of Thai culture. Toborowsky was a recently divorced father when a friend took him on a trip to Thailand to help him get over his divorce. Toborowsky met the much younger Annie Suwan — the couple has a 24-year age difference. He was 48 when they met in 2008.

The two fell in love and Toborowsky proposed but then had to come up with a suitable dowry for Suwan's parents. They reportedly requested a sum between $23,000 and $25,000. Since Toborowsky was unemployed and broke at the time, they settled on an initial payment of $1500 and two water buffalo.

As of October 2019, Toborowsky and Suwan are still together. They live in Scottsdale, Arizona and pursue standup comedy as a hobby. However, Toborowsky isn't off the hook as far as the dowry is concerned. As of 2019 he still owes about $13,500.

8. Afisa Nava Keys “Idiot” Onto Jorge Nava’s Car

Anfisa Nava and Jorge Nava had one of the more tumultuous relationships on 90 Day Fiancé, and the car-keying incident barely scratches the surfaces.

Their relationship first appeared on the fourth season of 90 Day Fiancé, which aired in 2016. Jorge comes from the U.S., and Anfisa is from Russia. The two first met online when he contacted her on Facebook. Soon after, he took her on an expensive European vacation, but it was ruined when Jorge refused to buy Anfisa a $10,000 handbag. After that initial hurdle, Anfisa agreed to move to the U.S. and marry Jorge. But Jorge put her up in a hotel room because his past criminal history made it difficult to rent an apartment. Other highlights from the show included the time Anfisa admitted to Jorge she was into him for his money when Jorge refused to buy her a ring for their wedding and when Anfisa keyed "Idiot" into his car.

Things finally came to an end on February 12th, 2018. Jorge was arrested with 293 lbs of marijuana in his car and was later sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Anfisa initially said she planned to stay with Jorge, but as of February 2020, it looks like she may have moved on and found another boyfriend.

9. Danielle Mullins Tries To Get Mohamed Jbali Deported

Dishonesty can hurt any relationship. When it comes to 90 Day Fiancé, season two stars Danielle Mullins and Mohamed Jbali, and there was plenty of dishonesty on both sides. They met in an online chatroom, and she agreed to marry him five months later, even though they had never met in person. Jbali move from his native Tunisia to Ohio to be with her, and although Jbali had said he had a job, he was unemployed.

Right after they were married, Jbali called the police on Mullins after she allegedly opened a DirecTV account in his name. Jbali later learned that Mullins had been arrested for felony theft and forgery in 2005. Jbali left Mullins shortly after.

When Mullins saw photos of Jbali with another woman, she felt that Jbali had only been interested in her to obtain a visa, and she filed for an annulment. “I felt used, so I filed for an annulment. That was my best chance to get him deported,” she said. “But when he begged me to file for a divorce instead, I gave in so he could stay in America.”

As of 2019, Jbali lives in Austin, TX, while Mullins said she's seeing someone new.
