Kate Middleton is slowly easing into royal motherhood.

The Duchess of Cambridge knows she is expected to provide an heir for the royal family, but she’s testing out parenthood by adopting a puppy first!

Kate and her husband of nearly a year, Prince William, are the proud new parents of a black cocker spaniel puppy, but they’re keeping his name a secret!

“He is a private pet and they do not want his name to be made public although the couple are happy to confirm that they do, indeed, have a new dog,” a St. James Palace spokesman said.

The puppy is a few months old and already loves taking long walks with his royal parents. He is reportedly from a litter bred by Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, who loves the Spaniel breed.

Hopefully Kate’s inlaws will be okay with the new addition — the Queen of England is known for her love of dogs, although she favors corgis as her chosen pet. The Queen has loved the little legged breed ever since she was first gifted a puppy by her parents more than 60 years ago.

The Queen has a reported five corgis and in addition she breeds labradors and cocker spaniels as working gun dogs.

Spaniels have royal ties going way back in history. In the 1600s, King Charles II was such a fan of spaniels that he even had a breed named after him, the Cavalier King Charles.
