I think the "Ian McKellen" bit was a genuine mistake. Michael Gambon being notoriously heterosexual -- mistress and wife both, and he's completely open about it -- would make this post, serious or not (and I know it's not) kind of pointless. But the actor is Michael Gambon. This isn't an attempt at journalism, it's just a weak attempt at humor. I know Choire does much, much better work than this, so I get the feeling he's just freaking sick of doing these FI posts and is just throwing stuff out there to see if it gets posted.
