Posted by: natmax on January 26, 2008 7:41 PM The CORVAIR was first available in 1959 and was the first car to have a Porsche 911 style rear air cooled engine. And first with factory standard windshield wipers.... When Chevrolet first showed prototype it was very advanced with independent rear suspension. But to cut cost it was replaced on this first production model with the inferior and dangerous swing axel similar to old VW Beetles. The car shown in the picture is a 1966. In 1965 a new, improved model was released that corrected the dangerous problem with a new rear end. Rudy's Corvair may have an oil leak, or let engine fumes into car when you turn the heat on and may have rusted out at the rocker panels, but Rudy's car is safe at any speed and if it's a Corsa model it may have shipped 1966 with one of the first factory turbo charger!!! But the fate of the Corvair was sealed. The car was replaced with a very similar design based on the 2nd Corvair's beautiful Fisher body. The new car, with a traditional front engine car V6 was named the Camero! This model was an excellent car, not the death trap that previous model (1959-1964) was! I am off to eBAY.
