Posted by: dlubar on January 8, 2008 11:12 AM While I enjoyed the article, I can't help mentioning that it leaves those readers who are unfamiliar with YA fiction with the impression that the entire field comprises a single genre. This is akin to equating all of adult fiction with mystery novels or Harlequin romances. YA literature runs a range from escapist fluff to serious works, and has a middle ground as broad and deep as any other field. As for "teenage superficiality," I'm pretty sure such events seem far from superficial to those who are experiencing them. I guess this misperception about YA novels isn't a big deal, since those who need to know (i.e., teens, librarians, and teachers), are already aware of the quality works available to readers of YA fiction. I need to add one side note and a disclaimer. The side note: given the tendency for the chick-lit genre to feature cover illustrations of young ladies wearing low slung jeans and tube tops, I've been inspired to coin the phrase "midriff fiction." The disclaimer: I'm biased. I writer YA fiction for a living. Posted by: dlubar on January 5, 2008 1:55 PM |

Yes, there is an amusing typo in the last line of my previous comment.
