The insertion of Sam Tanenhaus can't help but push a little balance in the the NY Times Week in Review section. Not much, maybe, but a little.
I feel today's national split between Democrats and Republicans traces back directly to the Chambers and Hiss case, and the early Nixon days. Fault lines have been pretty much the same for over 50 years, especially in New York, where so many were once fellow travelers. In Sam Tanenhaus the Times has somebody who knows this history like the back of his hand. He will improve the Times as long as he can stand being the only sane man in the asylum.
