Early Days: Scott was adopted by a Mormon couple, Ivan and Lula Bambrough, who named her Luann Bambrough and raised her in Roy, Utah. She changed her name to sound exotic when she became a model at age 17.
Moves Like Jagger: Scott met Rolling Stones frontman Jagger on the set of a photo shoot in 2001 when she was working as the stylist. It was an odd match, as she was 23 years the big-lipped singer’s junior; and, at 6’3”, she towered over the 5 foot, 8 inch rocker.
Shoe Fetish: Despite her height, Scott didn’t hesitate to wear a heel and make famous men, such as actor Val Kilmer -- pictured with her here -- look tiny. She once revealed, “My mother would say: 'So, you're already tall. Why not be taller! Why shouldn't you get those heels?!’” Scott later said admitted she owned a hundred pairs of shoes, dishing, “They're scattered between every city I have a home in: London, Paris, and New York.”
Young Model: Scott had already reached six feet tall by the age of 12 and soon went into modeling.
Fashion Week Trouble: Earlier this year, both Scott and her friend Victoria Beckham (shown here at a runway show) announced they were unable to show at London fashion week due to production issues. Insiders cited the pressure of the various fashion events on the designers.
Taming A Rolling Stone?: In Scott’s mother’s opinion, the designer was more than a match for Jagger. “L'Wren is very independent and would not take any nonsense from anyone, no matter how famous they were,” Bambrough told a newspaper in 2003. “She usually knows what she wants and she gets it. It doesn't surprise me at all that she's tamed Mick. She is very much her own woman and it would be my guess that is why this Mick Jagger likes her.”
Career Slide?: Scott, shown here with Gwen Stefani at the 2009 Vanity Fair Oscar party, had many celebrity fans who were styled by her and wore her clothes. But although she was ranked among The Hollywood Reporter’s 25 Most Powerful Stylists in 2011, 2012 and 2013, she failed to make the list this year.
A Model Life: When Scott was a teenager, photographer Bruce Weber spotted her while she was skiing. He subsequently shot her for a Calvin Klein campaign, paid her $1,500, "and that was the money I bought my one-way ticket to Paris with,” she told The Telegraph. Scott modeled in Paris for eight years but unlike her friend Naomi Campbell (pictured) she was too tall for the catwalk. She specialized in editorial work instead.
Famous Friends: Scott hung out with an A-list crowd and was the fashion stylist for some of Hollywood’s hottest stars -- even designing one of Nicole Kidman’s Oscar gowns. Kidman explained, “She knows what aspects to accentuate in a woman, and is able to make you feel incredibly sexy and sophisticated when you are in one of her exquisite designs.”
Like A Rolling Stone: In 2010, nine years into their relationship, Jagger described Scott as someone he was “kind of dating.” The twice-wed rock star clearly had no plans on marrying Scott, telling Women and Home magazine, “To be honest I don’t think much of marriage. I’m not saying people shouldn’t do it but it’s not for me.” In return, Scott was discreet about their relationship, rarely discussing it.
How She Lived: Scott, shown here at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards in 2012, told the magazine about a typical day in her life for a feature. “The first thing I do in the morning is take my vitamins. I don't want to say which vitamins; I don't think you should push what you believe in,” she said. But the designer admitted her life was hectic and said, “I can't predict when I'll go to sleep. If I need to fall asleep early, I do, and if I stay awake until 2 or 3 in the morning, I do.”
Joins Banana Republic: Scott, who became a high-end designer in 2006, continued to widen her brand, and at the end of 2013, she launched a collaboration with Banana Republic, starring alongside models in the ads. Some of her BR shirts were inspired by her famous boyfriend, Jagger, featuring a big lip motif! Her proud boyfriend appeared with the designer at the kickoff party at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles in November 2013.
Attends British Fashion Awards: Scott, here in Dec. 2013, said her fashion sense came early. “'I had to learn to sew when I was growing up, because nothing else fitted me,” she explained. “I used to spend hours at the local store, leafing through big books of Vogue and Butterick patterns, and then order one of them, and wait for it to arrive, so that by the time it was delivered I was really excited.”
Fans were shocked when Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, fashion designer L’Wren Scott, committed suicide by hanging on Monday, March 17. It was an incredible life cut short, and now, Radar takes a look back at her incredible journey from Mormonism to modeling, designing, and loving a Rolling Stone!
