Until last year, innocuously pretty, doll-faced beauties (like Australian Gemma Ward) were the undisputed darlings of the fashion world. Then, suddenly, the mood shifted. Chalk it up to apocalyptic ennui or recessional rage—suddenly, being straightforwardly gene-blessed seemed a little, well, passé.  

Enter Agyness Deyn. The lanky, boyish girl-next-door with the shock of platinum blonde hair and the off-beat sense of style is suddenly the talk of the fashion world.

1. HER NAME AIN'T REAL
The international modeling phenom known as Agyness Deyn is really Laura Hollins from gloomy Rawtenstall, England. Don't blame her for the snooty rebrand, though: Her mom, a Reiki master, cooked it up (recklessly adding y's for notice-me weirdness).

Also contrived: reports that Deyn, 25, was discovered at 17 working in a haddock-and-chips shop. The fish part's true, but she'd been modeling since puberty.
