Becoming a royal and losing much of her freedom has not been easy for Meghan Markle. As RadarOnline.com has learned, the Duchess of Sussex recently shut down her secret Instagram account after reading what trolls were saying about her.

"Since she shut down her public Instagram, she'd had a fake account to follow her friends," an insider told The Sun. "There was some really vile stuff written by social media trolls and obviously she also saw the headlines about her."

RadarOnline.com readers know Meghan, 37, had a cheeky Instagram related to her lifestyle blog, The Tig, before meeting Prince Harry. As soon as the love birds announced their engagement, however, she closed her account and opened a fake one.

"It really got to her and, in the end, she had to shut down that account just before Christmas, too, to protect her mental health," said the source. "She felt very isolated and alone."

Apart from her ongoing feud with Kate Middleton, her estrangement from her father and her allegedly broken relationship with her staffers, Meghan has also had to deal with scary threats. The insider said she fears for her safety, and now so does Harry, 34.

"She doesn't feel safe enough to go out on her own without protection," said the source. "There are certain things she's extremely paranoid about, such as being physically attacked."

RadarOnline.com readers know Harry has even gotten neo-Nazi threats for marrying mix-raced Meghan.

"Harry has fed into this — he's hugely protective and doesn't want her to be put at any risk, so that understandable worry has made her very uneasy," continued the insider. "There is no way she'd consider putting her personal safety and that of her unborn child at risk."
